“My fur coat is hanging from the back of the gig, but I cannot reach it, and none of my limber pack of patients lifts a finger.” (Kafka)

I chose this quote from “A Country Doctor” because it shows the Doctor’s true intentions. We can interpret this whole story as a dream of the doctor since every event is very unrealistic and very dream-like. This quote depicts the Doctor’s unconscious mind showing him a dream about what he actually wants to do with his job. Through Freudian lens we can see this dream’s “latent content”  which is the hidden meaning of this dream (Freud 2222). The hidden meaning behind this dream is the Doctor’s hatred for his job as he wants to keep running away from people related to this job. The Doctor runs away naked from his patient knowing that it’s snowing outside and he has to travel a long way to get home. He also knows unconsciously that his patients don’t care about him as he mentions how they wont even lift a finger to help him. The Doctor’s unconscious mind shows him his true feelings about his job through this dream since he just wants to get away from everyone he’s associated with through his job. We can also see another example of this in the beginning of the story as the Doctor doesn’t give a second thought about giving away his maid “Rose”, who’s lived with him for years, to a random person.
